VISSITUDES of An Anglo-Irish Family 1530-1800 A story of Irish Romance and tragedy.
Published 1925 London - as the title states the book concentrates on the fortunes of the Irish Bagenalls (Bagnall) which started in the 15th C with the Knights of Sir Nicholas & Sir Henry Bagenall (when this book was published the critics of the time stated the book concentrated too much on history rather than a genealogy study - even with this bias the book does give extensive family pedigree details).

BAGNALL - on the fringe of the moorlands
Published 1900 - describes the village and inhabitants over the centuries
Chapter 1 "Bagnall is a hilltop village lying 751 feet (229 metres) above sea level. The siting probably owes its origins to some form of religious observance being at a place where moorland routes converged; a cross was erected to guide travellers and to indicate a known or well-used route. The place-name Bagnall has Anglo-Saxon elements in it. Duigan in his Notes on Staffordshire Place-names, prefers the word HOLT meaning woodland in Bagnall Bag(holt) Bacga being a personal prefix hence Bacgaholt. Ekwall sees the first element as Old English Badeca, a personal noun with the second syllable being bolt as above or, halh meaning "a nook, recess, a remote valley". The various spellings of the name are Badegenhall in 1273, Baginholt in 1271, Bagenholt in 1281. The personal surname which has developed from the place-name also has various spellings such as, de Bagenhall, Bagenholt, Bagnold, Bagynhalt, Badenhall and Bagnall."
